Window Film DIY Installation Tutorial

by Limited Kei Lok 25 Mar 2026
Looking to upgrade the glass windows of your Hong Kong home, shop, or office? DIY glass film installation is the most cost-effective solution, saving you installation fees! Whether you want to improve indoor insulation, reduce UV damage, or create a private space, just follow these standard 5 steps, with the right tools and precautions, even a novice can successfully complete the task.

✅ Prepare your tools: Ensure you have all the necessary tools to get the job done right the first time!

For DIY glass film installation, having a complete set of essential tools is crucial to ensure optimal adhesion and quality:

  • Spray bottle, glass scraper (essential for cleaning and decontamination)
  • Scratch-proof scouring pad, squeegee (for surface cleaning and water removal/positioning)
  • Squeegee, scissors, ruler (key for cutting and trimming)

All tools can be easily purchased at Hong Kong home stores or hardware shops, allowing you to start the work at a low cost.

⚠️ Important Notes: Critical details determine success

  1. When cleaning, avoid using stiff brushes or abrasive cleaning materials, as this may scratch the glass surface and affect the film's effectiveness.
  2. It is recommended to use a soft cloth or clean towel for cleaning, and never use the same cloth to wipe window sills or frames, to prevent residual dirt from causing the film to lift at the edges.
  3. Glass film needs 30 days to thoroughly dry and cure. During this period, do not clean or touch it, and avoid strong impacts to prevent the film from shifting or being damaged.
  4. If applying film to glass doors or large windows, it is recommended for 2 people to work together to avoid improper operation that could lead to wrinkles or adhesive residue.

📝 5 Steps for DIY Installation: Super simple from cleaning to completion

Step 1: Deep clean the glass surface

First, spray the glass with a spray bottle, then thoroughly scrape off surface dust, grease, and stubborn dirt with a glass scraper. When cleaning, be sure to use a scratch-proof scouring pad to ensure the glass surface is smooth and free of impurities; this is the core key to preventing the film from lifting.

Step 2: Thoroughly dust and wipe clean

Wipe the glass surface thoroughly with a clean scratch-proof scouring pad, then use a squeegee to remove excess water, ensuring the glass is free of dust, water stains, and lint. Any tiny specks of dirt can cause bubbles in the film.

Step 3: Lay the film flat and align it

Carefully remove the backing paper from the precisely cut film and lay it on the glass surface, gently adjusting the film's position to ensure it aligns with the glass edges and avoids skewing.

Step 4: Squeegee water + double-check repeatedly

After correcting the film's position, use a squeegee to systematically push out excess water and air from the inside of the film, working from top to bottom and from the center outwards. Repeat this operation at least twice to ensure the film adheres tightly to the glass without leaving bubbles or moisture.

Step 5: Trim excess edges + Completion

Finally, use scissors and a ruler to precisely trim the excess film around the glass. Once the edges are neatly trimmed, the entire DIY installation process is complete! After 30 days of curing, you can enjoy the dual benefits of heat insulation, sun protection, and privacy.
